Qualifying closed for Nov. ballot

COVINGTON - Qualifying for the Nov. 3 Municipal Election brought out some political newcomers as well as seasoned veterans this week.

Qualifying closed at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

It appears the most contested race is for mayor of Newborn, with three candidates, including incumbent J.W. Cummings, in the running. Most council post races are uncontested.

Candidates who qualified are:

Covington

Council Post 1, East Ward: Chris Smith

Council Post 2, West Ward: Hawnethia Williams (incumbent); Charles Wilborn

Council Post 3, West Ward: Ocie Franklin (incumbent)

Oxford

Post 4: Sue Dale; Tillie Smith

Post 5: Jim Windham (incumbent)

Post 6: Terry Smith (incumbent)

Porterdale

Post 3: Arline Chapman (incumbent)

Post 4: Mike Harper (incumbent)

Post 5: Lowell Chambers (incumbent); Andy Grimes

Newborn

Mayor: J.W. Cummings (incumbent); James King; Roger Sheridan

Council Post 1: Gene Downs

Council Post 2: John Donaldson

Council Post 3: Thomas Krieger

Council Post 4: Wanda Cummings (incumbent); Martha Ellwanger

Beginning this year, the town is adopting staggered terms. To get on track with that schedule, whoever is elected to council posts 1 and 2 will serve two-year terms, while council posts 3 and 4 will serve four-year terms.

Mansfield

Council Post 3: Lyra Cocchi (incumbent)

Council Post 4: Larry Haigwood (incumbent)

Council Post 5: Larry Cummins (incumbent)
