Alcovy wins three, Eastside takes two at weekend play date

COVINGTON - Alcovy went 3-1 in their play date, while after a slow start, Eastside's volleyball team rallied to win their last two matches on Saturday to finish the Alcovy play date 2-2.

"It looked as if we had pulled some kids out of a P.E. class and said, 'Here, play,'" said Eastside coach Angie Lewis. "We were moving slowly, missing easy hits, off on timing, and weren't communicating on the floor."

The Lady Eagles lost to Alcovy 16-25, 25-21, 17-25 and Woodland 25-16, 25-20 before turning it around.

After losing the first game to West Hall 25-14, Eastside came back to win the match, beating the Lady Spartans 25-23, 25-23.

It also took the Lady Eagles three tries to beat Locust Grove. Eastside lost the first game 25-19 but came back 25-21, 25-17 to take the match.

"We played much better during the third and fourth matches and beat two good teams - playing them like we knew what we were doing. We were still making some elementary mistakes and (we) had a player playing out of position while at the same time learning new rotations," Lewis said.

Katie Johnston paced the team with 18 aces, 25 kills and 25 digs for the four games.

Leading the team in assists was Naomi Wills with 34.

Also being productive for the Lady Eagles were Antonia Mullins (7 aces, 3 kills, 10 digs), Kelsey Gerks (13 digs) and Sydney Mumpower (4 kills).

After going 1-0 following their win over Eastside, the Lady Tigers improved to 2-0 by beating Jackson 25-13, 25-17.

Brittany Jacobson led the team in kills and serving three aces against Eastside while Danielle Staples had three aces in the win over Jackson.

Alcovy lost to Eagle's Landing 27-25, 25-19 before closing the play date with a 25-14, 25-19 win over Jackson County. Jacobson and Staples led the team with kills and aces.
