Newton County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tyrone Oliver demonstrates the many ways a keychain kubotan can be used for self-defense to, left to right, Peggy Hawley, Lee Aldridge and Unice Stevens, members of the Service Guild of Covington. The group will host a self-defense class for women on Nov. 7 at 9:30 a.m. at the NCSO auditorium on Alcovy/Jersey Road. The class is open to women of all ages. "Even if you walk with a cane or a walker, this class is for you," said Hawley, who is organizing the event. Oliver said participants would learn how to protect themselves without a firearm and learn important safety tips. "With the holiday season approaching, we'll tell them the importance of awareness of your surroundings and if you are attacked, how to get away or defend yourself from an attacker," Oliver said.
