Mansfield Elementary School first-grader Mallory Glaze makes the acquaintance of a few new friends during the puppet show presented by the Elkadettes from the Covington Elks Lodge No. 1805 Wednesday morning. The show, which reminded students of the dangers of drug activity, was made possible by a $5,000 grant from Snapping Shoals REA. There are five puppets, each manned by Elks and Elkadette volunteers. The occasion was Red Ribbon Week, designed to bring drug awareness to Newton County School System students and others nationwide. The theme is, "I've Better Things to do Than Drugs." "At the present time NCSS grades three and four are involved in a Drug Awareness Poster Contest which they will complete in the next few weeks ... the fifth-graders and middle school students have the opportunity to compete in the essay contest also during the next couple of weeks. We do appreciate the counselors at the schools helping us with these projects," said Covington Elkadette Miriam Wheeler.
