COVINGTON -- Elections will take place Tuesday in four of Newton County's five municipalities.

With very few races contested, early voting has been light.

The Newton County Board of Elections reported 171 people had cast ballots in person for the Covington council race as of noon Thursday. Fifty-six absentee ballots have been mailed out, and so far, 29 have been turned in.

In Oxford, 10 people have cast early and absentee ballots, and in Newborn, only four.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The following races are contested:

Covington

Council Post 2, West Ward: Hawnethia Williams (incumbent); Charles Wilborn

Voting will take place at Covington City Hall, located at 2194 Emory St. Ballots will be counted at the Newton County Administration Building, located at 1113 Usher St.

Oxford

Post 4: Sue Dale; Tillie Mitchell

Voting and ballot counting will take place at Oxford Community Center at 810 Whatcoat St.

Porterdale

Post 5: Lowell Chambers (incumbent); Andy Grimes

Voting will take place at Porterdale Fire Department located at 2 Main St. Results will be posted at the fire department and at City Hall.

Newborn

Mayor: J.W. Cummings (incumbent); James King; Roger Sheridan

Council Post 4: Wanda Cummings (incumbent); Martha Ellwanger

Voting and posting of results will take place at Newborn Town Hall.

The city of Mansfield will not hold an election, as all candidates are running unopposed.

The Citizen has profiled candidates for office during the last several months, but not all returned calls requesting interviews.

Those who have not been featured are Oxford candidate Tillie Mitchell, Porterdale candidate Andy Grimes, and Newborn candidates Wanda Cummings and James King.

Oxford candidate Tillie Mitchell was formerly known as Tillie Smith. Her name will be listed as Tillie Mitchell on Tuesday's ballot.
