COVINGTON -- Little goblins and ghouls will have plenty of chances to fill their sacks and pumpkins with candy this Halloween.
Several local churches and businesses are hosting festivities that are open to the general public.
One of the county's largest celebrations, the trunk-or-treat event hosted by First Baptist Church on the Square in downtown Covington, will not take place this year.
The event, which has drawn up to 3,000 participants in the past, will be back next year, said Children's Minister Kristin Sorensen.
"We just decided to take a break. It takes a lot of resources and time and people. We're doing it to witness to people out there and we feel like we're not doing a good job. This is a brainstorming year for us to come up with something bigger and better next year," she said.
But there are other options for those who want a more structured celebration for their children on Halloween.
Newton Plaza will host its annual trick-or-treat event from 5 to 7 p.m. Children can go around to each store and pick up treats from tenants, said a spokeswoman for Halpern Enterprises Inc., the property owner.
