COVINGTON - A 25-year-old Newton County man was stabbed in the chest Sunday night during a fight with his assailant, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
Lt. Tyrone Oliver said deputies received a call about 10:45 p.m. Sunday and arrived at 940 Mote Road to find the victim in the yard with two stab wounds to the chest. Oliver said the injured man was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Ronald Hinton, 38, of 700 Spring Hill Road, has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident.
"Evidently the victim and Hinton got into an altercation. The victim was being aggressive toward Hinton," Oliver said. "The victim came up behind Hinton and hit him in the head with a beer bottle, knocking him to the ground. They continued fighting and that's when Mr. Hinton reached into his pocket and pulled out a knife, stabbing the victim."
Oliver said it is unknown what triggered the incident and charges could be pending against the victim.
"Alcohol was involved," Oliver said.
Following the stabbing, Hinton left the scene and returned to his home where deputies found him.
The victim remains hospitalized, but at this time it is not believed his injuries are life-threatening, Oliver said.
