COVINGTON - The Boy Scouts of America are celebrating the dedication of a new nature center at Bert Adams Scout Reservation off Ga. Highway 36 at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The center is named the John S. Langford Nature Center in honor of Senior Georgia Superior Court Judge Jack Langford, a former Eagle Scout who has continued to be involved in Scouting for more than 70 years, according to a printed press release concerning the event.
"We find it very appropriate that the nature center is dedicated to Judge Langford. His dedication to the youth in out community and his passion for the Scouting program is extraordinary. He has touched the lives of thousands of youth and fellow adult volunteers," said Scout Executive Don McChesney of the Atlanta Area Council.
Last year, more than 13,279 youth and 10,838 adults camped at the Bert Adams Reservation and all ranks of Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting have a nature component.
"Getting youth out into nature and the environment is so central to Scouting that catch phrases like, 'Without the OUTING, there is no SCOUTING,' have become emblematic of Scouting's commitment to expose young people to the natural world," the press release states.
To that end, the nature center, which will serve as an education center for Scouts of all ages in the Southeast, features a stone and timber pavilion, training areas, exterior exhibit display cases and interior classrooms.
The center is part of the newly renovated Bert Adams Scout Reservation. The new construction of the nature center and other renovations are made possible by the on-going successful $15 million capital campaign, the press release states. As part of that campaign, a challenge grant was made to name the center in Langford's honor.
"Many of the donations were made by friends and Scouts that were touched by Langford," the release states.
The public is invited to attend the 2 p.m. dedication ceremony which will be followed by a reception and tours of the Bert Adams Scout Reservation. For more information or to make reservations, call 770-956-3192.
