COVINGTON - The Newton County Sheriff's Office has announced a motorcycle ride Saturday to benefit its CHAMPS program, an educational program for the county's fifth-graders.
The program was instituted this year as a replacement to the DARE program. The ride will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning at NCSO headquarters located at 15151 Alcovy Road. "The riders will travel to the tranquil back roads of Newton County and finish back at the Sheriff's Office," said NCSO Cpl. Anthony Washington, community outreach liaison. "Lunch will be provided to all participating motorcycle riders ... and the NCSO will have several vehicles on display during the event." The cost for the ride is $30 for each motorcycle. There will be an additional $5 charge for each passenger. T-shirts are included in the registration package. CHAMPS stands for Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety and is a program of the Georgia Sheriff's Association. It teaches students about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drugs. It also addresses peer pressure, bullying and computer safety. The 12-week program includes a weekly hour-long lesson. For more information on the ride, call Deputy Jack Redlinger at 678-625-1400 or email jredlinger@newtonsheriffga.org.More like this story
