COVINGTON - Georgia Perimeter College students and Newton County residents will celebrate baseball and daffodils next week.
Beginning Monday and ending Friday on Georgia Perimeter College's Newton Campus off Ga. Highway 11 in Newton County, the school will hold its annual Daffodil Festival and Symposium.
This year's theme is "Play Ball! America's Favorite Pastimes."
"It makes sense for us to merge these events this year with a focus on baseball and softball," said GPC Academic Dean Alan Jackson in a press release. "GPC's teams are based on our campus. We want to honor our Jaguars by treating these vital sports academically, recognizing their fascinating history and sharing our hopes for their enrichment of our students' lives in the future."
Aside from celebrating the local daffodil through the arts and selling bulbs, GPC has scheduled several events - both to be held inside and outside on the Newton Campus - throughout the week to focus on baseball and other academic, cultural and festive activities.
Events include baseball talks and panels, poetry readings, film screenings, a campfire and storytelling and a concert from folk singer John McCutcheon, who sings original songs about baseball and softball.
Speakers include former major league baseball player Tim Hyers, Gwinnett Braves Assistant General Manager Bill Blackwell and former Brooklyn Dodger Danny McDivitt. Baseball history authorities Ken Fenster and James Riley also will discuss the white and black Atlanta Cracker teams.
More information about events, which are sponsored by the Newton Arts and Humanities Advisory Council, the Newton Student Government Association, GPC College Foundation and the Newton Citizen, is available online at www.gpc.edu/~newahac.
