Musicians to heat up fall festival audience

COVINGTON - This year's Covington Lions Club fall festival is not just about barbecue - it's also about entertainment.

During this week's Sherman's Last Burning Fall Festival and BBQ Cook-Off, the Lions Club has lined up several musical competitions and events to entertain guests.

In the newest event, the festival will feature a Battle of the Bands. The event will start at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Four bands - Jessie Bock and Livin' Easy, Apostles of Bluegrass, Alcovy River Band and Southern Mischief - each will play a 20-minute set.

"We were looking for something a little different," Lions Club Vice Chair Ed Minge said about the new feature. "It's going to be a variety, some country and light rock."

After all of the bands perform, the winner will be announced about 9 p.m.

This is the second musical event featured at the festival this year. The other is Covington Idol and Jr. Idol, which features area singers competing for the top singing spot in town. Jr. Idol Awards - the competition for singers under age 17 - will be given at 8:30 p.m. Friday, and the Covington Idol awards will be given at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Also at the cook-off is an Iron Chef Cook-Off at 5 p.m. Friday, a Miss Hazzard Pageant at 11 a.m. Saturday, a Backyard BBQ Cook-Off at 11 a.m. Saturday, and the Southeast Reptile Live Shows at noon and 5 p.m. Saturday. This is in addition to barbecue vendors and a Kiddie Corner that will be set up during the festival.

Admission to the festival, which is at the American Legion Field on Mill Street, is a $4 gate fee; children under 12 are free. More information about the festival is available at www.covingtongalions.org.
