There's no doubt about it: The future of golf at Eastside is good hands.
How good? Good enough to sweep all the top honors on the Citizen's 2009 All-Area Golf Team.
Tate Miller is the Boys Golfer of the Year after putting together a sensational sophomore season for the Eagles. The Girls Golfer of the Year is Maggie Smith, who turned in a solid season while leading the Lady Eagles' young squad.
Eastside's Jay Cawthon is the Golf Coach of the Year after guiding the boys squad to its region championship in school history. The Eagles finished 13th at the state meet and retained the Newton Cup for the fifth straight season.
Tate Miller (Sophomore, Eastside): Miller posted an 18-hole average of 75 for the Eagles. He tied for the Region 8-AAA runner-up honors, shooting a round of 78, which included four birdies in tough conditions at Hard Labor Creek. At the Class AAA state tournament, he had an 80.
JT Blaker (Junior, Eastside): Blaker average a 77 per 18 holes for the Eagles. He tied with Miller for the 8-AAA runner-up honors with a 78. He also shot an 80 at the Class AAA state tournament.
Bennett Mitchell (Junior, Heritage): Mitchell led the Patriots to another Conyers Cup championship by earning the medalist honors in the three-day event with a 115. He also posted Heritage's lowest round at Region 8-AAAA tournament with an 80 at Chateau Elan. At the Class AAAA state tournament, he missed a top-10 individual finish by four strokes, shooting a 5-over-par 77. Mitchell's 18-hole average was 77.
Harrison Elliott (Sophomore, Heritage): Elliott teamed with Mitchell to give Heritage a solid one-two punch. He finished one stroke behind his teammate in the Conyers Cup, posting a 116. At the state tournament, he equaled Mitchell's low round of 77. In the region tournament, he added an 80. Elliott also posted a third-place individual finish in the Heritage Invitational with a 76.
Matt Moore (Senior, Alcovy): Moore was a model of consistency for the Tigers as he helped his team earn its first state tournament berth in school history. His 77 in the Region 4-AAAA tournament at Indian Creek was just two shots away from being low medalist. At the state tournament, he recorded Alcovy's lowest round with an 82.
Maggie Smith (Junior, Eastside): Smith was instrumental in the Lady Eagles' quest to retaining the Newton Cup, taking the low medalist honors in the event at 100. She compiled a nine-hole average of 48.
Erin Knowles (Senior, Salem): Knowles ran away with the low medalist honor at the Conyers Cup. posting a 30-stroke victory. Her effort helped the Lady Seminoles capture the team honors at the Conyers Cup. Her nine-hole average was 53.
