COVINGTON -- The Newton County Community Band will celebrate the holiday season with its annual Christmas concert, set for 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Eastside High School auditorium.
The concert is free and open to everyone.
This is the 17th year the band has performed a holiday concert, said director T.K. Adams Sr. Among the tunes that will be played are "Silent Night," "Still, Still, Still," "As I Wander" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Operatic soprano Theresa Hamm-Smith, a Conyers native, will perform four seasonal solos with the band.
The program is being dedicated to the memory of Dr. Neal Bond Fleming, a founding member of the Arts Association in Newton County, and to Dr. John Johannaber, a flutist with the band for its first eight years, who both died earlier this year.
The band is comprised of 54 members from Newton, Rockdale and four surrounding counties. The youngest members are in high school, while the oldest is 81.
"We are the only county in the area that has a community band ... We feel we have a unique group," Adams said, adding that he hopes the community will come out to enjoy the music and support the band.
