Georgia State Patrol Post 46 in Monroe reported a crash Wednesday night at Interstate 20 and U.S. 278 in Newton County that tied up traffic for more than three hours.
According to the GSP, about 7 p.m. the driver of a Honda Civic traveling westbound on I-20 lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median into eastbound traffic where it struck a tractor trailer truck. During the crash, the engine block of the Honda was dislodged and hurled back across the median into westbound traffic where it was hit by another vehicle. At the same time, after striking the truck, the Honda was hit by a Saturn traveling eastbound.
There were no fatalities, but the crash sent two people to the hospital, one to Atlanta Medical Center and a second to Newton Medical Center. The interstate was closed until approximately 10 p.m. while the accident was investigated and debris cleared.
The driver of the Honda is expected to be charged with failure to maintain lane, according to the GSP.
