Kevin Smyrl, left, Oxford College assistant dean for Development and Alumni Relations, accepts a check for $1,000 from Nan Lamperski, store manager for Wal-Mart in Covington.
The check was given by Wal-Mart to benefit the Oxford Institute for Environmental Education, a program founded at Oxford College in 1992.
Each summer OIEE provides an opportunity for science teachers in grades kindergarten through 12th grades to gain new science teaching methods and investigative techniques through collaboration with the Oxford College biology faculty and others in science education.
Wal-Mart is a long-time supporter of OIEE, and the funds given will be used to provide supplies used during OIEE instruction that participating teachers can in turn take back with them to their classrooms. In 2009 alone,
OIEE has had an impact on more than 1,000 students through its participants, who teach across Georgia and north Florida.
