COVINGTON -- Ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things -- that's what veterans are, said keynote speaker Glenn Whitaker at a Veterans Day ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 32 on the Square in downtown Covington on Wednesday.

Porterdale begins work on budget

PORTERDALE -- City officials are in the process of scrutinizing a 2010 budget draft that includes a proposed millage rate increase of 3.5 mills.City Manager Tom Fox told council members at a work session Tuesday night that the proposed millage increase will be critical if the council wants to avoid layoffs, furloughs or cuts in services to residents.

Big-hearted volunteer wins Pat Patrick award

COVINGTON -- Tuesday was a special day for the Newton Fund of The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The nonprofit organization celebrated its 10th anniversary and gave away the 2nd Annual Pat Patrick Award to recognize outstanding volunteer work.

School board approves changes to calendar

COVINGTON -- The Newton County School System is changing its 2009-10 school year calendar in anticipation of more state-mandated furlough days.During the monthly work session for the Newton County Board of Education on Tuesday, the school board unanimously approved a recommendation from NCSS Superintendent Steven Whatley to make several changes to this school year's calendar. Board member Almond Turner was absent from the meeting.
