COVINGTON -- A man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of a woman and the wounding of his brother at a residence at 120 Bell St. on Sunday night, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
The woman, 36-year-old Tajuana Lashawn Stroud of Covington, was dead at the scene. The man, Steven Cadet Smith, 42, the Bell Street resident, was transported to an Atlanta trauma center suffering from what NCSO spokesman Lt. Mark Mitchell described as "serious injury from gunfire."
Arrested and charged with the murder of Stroud and the aggravated assault of his brother was Ricky Lewis Smith Sr., 44, of Covington.
The incident occurred about 7:45 p.m. and deputies were immediately able to take Ricky Smith into custody, Mitchell said.
WSB-TV has reported that the dead woman was found in the yard of the Bell Street house; however, Mitchell would not confirm or deny that information, nor would he give any further details of the incident.
"As far as the actual motive, we're still trying to figure out what happened and why," Mitchell said. "Obviously, we have enough evidence to go ahead and charge Smith."
