COVINGTON - The Newton County Sheriff's Office has arrested a suspect it believes is responsible for two March burglaries of Salem Road gas stations.
Abu'naim Ali, 52, of 195 Oak Terrace Drive, was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary last Thursday at about 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Kroger store on Salem Road. An alert off-duty deputy spotted a vehicle he recognized as the one shown in video surveillance footage taken at the time of the burglary of the BP gas station at 3501 Salem Road. Seeing the suspect leave the parking lot, Lt. Tyrone Oliver followed him and contacted additional patrol deputies, NCSO spokesman Lt. Mark Mitchell said.
"Deputies were able to make contact with this individual and NCSO investigators have been able to determine that this subject was involved in the burglary at the BP station and an additional burglary on March 8 at the Shell station located at 3633 (B) Salem Road," Mitchell said.
A public appeal for assistance was made on April 17 with a photo that ran in the Citizen of the individual, as well as the vehicle he was driving.
Mitchell said in that burglary the individual was seen forcing open the door of the store and leaving with approximately $500 worth of cigarettes. Similar items were taken from the Shell station, he said.
