Conyers library plans list of summer activities for youth

CONYERS - Construction work at Nancy Guinn Library isn't stopping officials from getting area children to have a little fun at the library this summer.

Nancy Guinn Library has scheduled a summer full of activities at the library and at the Rockdale County Auditorium.

"We've consistently been having a lot of people come in here, so we expect the summer reading program to possibly upstage what we did last year," said Lauren Knowlton, youth services librarian at the Conyers library.

For children and teens this summer at the library, there are several workshops and performances scheduled.

On many Tuesdays in June and July, all ages are invited to the library, which is located at 864 Green St. in Olde Town Conyers, for creativity workshops. Activities include making paper airplanes and masks, coffeehouse, music and songwriting, dancing and painting.

On many Thursdays in June and July, the library will hold Thrilling Thursdays - previously known as Wonderful Wednesdays - at the Rockdale County Auditorium at 908 Main St. in Conyers. Performances include a mask theater, dramatic storytelling, African dance and puppets.

"I really hope this awesome weather holds up so we can do some of them outside too," Knowlton said.

A complete schedule of events is available at the library or on its Web site at www.rockdale.public.lib.ga.us. The library also has a Facebook page.

In addition to fun activities, the library wants children from infants to 18 years old to participate in its Summer Reading Program.

Starting May 30, those age groups can register at the library and pick up a reading log.

Each time a reader completes one of three levels of reading, they can come to the library and draw from several goodies donated by local businesses. They also will be able to enter their name into a drawing for a grand prize at the end of the summer.

Additionally, registrants will receive a bookmark that gives them a Web address to visit for a chance to receive a ticket to an Atlanta Hawks game from the Atlanta Spirit.

Participants have until July 22 to turn in their reading logs at the library.

On July 23, the library will hold an End of Summer Reading Program Party - complete with ice cream and games - from 3 to 5 p.m. outside at the library. The event is sponsored by the Conyers Civic League.

More information about summer events and the reading program is available by calling the youth services department at the library at 770-388-5040.
