COVINGTON - If you're looking for some fun over the Memorial Day holiday, look no further than Porterdale. The public is invited to attend Festival at the Mill, an event sponsored by Porterdale Baptist Church in an effort to raise funding for its free tutoring program offered to Newton County students.
According to organizer Brittany Miller, the church is also looking to expand the program so that it includes free tutoring for adults seeking their Georgia Educational Development (GED) diploma.
Miller said the event will be held in downtown Porterdale at the Porterdale Depot, across from Crowell Field from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be held rain or shine.
In addition to the traditional arts and crafts, food vendors and live music, McNair Amusements and Monroe Paintball Works will also have venues. She said tickets for unlimited carnival rides will be $15 and the paintball venue will charge $10. A portion of the proceeds from these concessions will go to the church program.
Other special events include a Hot Dog Eating Contest, sponsored by the Porterdale Fire Department, and a Hometown American Idol Contest.
Celebrities on hand for the event and to sign recently published books at Tattersall's will be former Braves star Otis Nixon and former Atlanta Falcon Derrick Moore and his wife.
Miller said there is no admission charge to the event, but the church would like for those attending to donate school supplies to enable them to give a full book bag of supplies to students who will attend their block party in August. And, of course, cash donations for that purpose will also be accepted.
Miller said there were approximately 25 students, ranging from first-graders to juniors in high school, currently participating in the church's tutoring program. They also have seven adult volunteers, as well as older students who help with the tutoring.
The program is held at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday and also includes games and physical activities. For more information on the tutoring program or the festival, call 770-862-3972 or 770-316-4867.
