Wilson Letter - 05/08/09

In 2009, 4-H Camp is more than canoeing, campfires, and swimming. 4-H Camp is about learning in the areas of photography, stream ecology, conservation, archery, and forestry, as well as cooking meals, herpetology and creating a personalized radio show. All of these activities contribute to a week-long oasis for youth.

This summer 100 fifth-grade Rockdale County 4-H members will travel to Wahsega 4-H Center in Dahlonega for summer camp. The cost for a week of camp is $260, which includes transportation, meals, lodging, a T-shirt, and all activities.

There are families who may not have enough money to meet the expense. To address this need, the Rockdale County 4-H Club tries to help families by offering a Camp Scholarship to 4-H'ers. We cannot do this without the support of the community. Last year we received 36 applications and thanks to the generosity of Rockdale County's businesses, civic groups, and individuals, we were able to extend assistance to all applicants. This year we have received requests from 23 families. Many of the applications are from people just trying to make ends meet; single income homes, no-income homes, families with multiple children, those with medical expenses, or those who have just found themselves in unpredictable situations.

To fund all requests, the 4-H Program needs $3,000. Any amount of money will make a difference and all donations are tax-deductible.

The growth and learning experience of a week away from home nurtures responsibility, teamwork, self-confidence and a fresh look at the world. We need your help in making sure that every Rockdale County 4-H'er has an opportunity to have that fresh look. Please consider donating a full or partial camp scholarship to a Rockdale County 4-H'er.

Remember that your full or partial scholarship is not only tax-deductible, but will also leave an impression on a child's life forever. Additionally, we are able to accept Corporate Matching Donations. Donations that are part of a Corporate Matching Donation program should be made out to the Georgia 4-H Foundation. All other donation checks can be made out to the Rockdale 4-H Club.

If you would like to help send a deserving child to 4-H camp, donations can be sent to Rockdale County 4-H Club, 1400 Parker Road, Lobby A, Conyers, GA 30094.

Funds are needed by May 29. If you would like more information on the 4-H camping program please call me at 770-278-7373.
