CONYERS - The Heritage boys golf team recorded a 14th-place finish in the Class AAAA boys state tournament Monday at Nob North Golf Course in Tunnel Hill.
Bennett Mitchell and Harrison Elliott both recorded 5-over-par 77s to lead the Patriots. The duo missed top-10 individual finishes by four strokes.
Joey Liston with an 86 and Chris Howard with a 97 rounded the Patriots' top four.
"I was proud of the way the boys played. I wish we could have finished stronger, but it was a good experience for us to take into next season," Heritage boys golf coach Judd Hinton said. "I was really pleased with the way that Bennett and Harrison played. I really hope that this experience will help us next year.
"I was pleasantly surprised with the way the season went. I really feel like we can use this season as a stepping stone for next year. We have some good pieces in place to have a really good year next year, and I'm looking forward to working with these kids again."
Inclement weather forced the tournament to delay its start by two hours. The Patriots were also not able to complete their practice round Sunday due to rain.
"The main problem with the weather was we didn't get to see the back side of the course during the practice round," Hinton said. "Our scores probably reflected that."
Heritage, which earned a state tournament bid with a runner-up finish in Region 8-AAAA, posted a team score of 337. Region 8-AAAA champion Habersham Central finished ninth overall at 319.
Alcovy finished 16th overall with a team score of 391. Matt Moore led the way with an 82 for the Tigers followed by Travis Aiken (101), Patrick McNally (103) and Tyler Azar (105). Alcovy earned its berth by finishing second in Region 4-AAAA.
Westside-Augusta won the Class AAAA title at 293, followed by Glynn Academy and Richmond Academy at 297. Dalton and Marist tied for fourth at 299.
