Hawkins signs with Ga. Southwestern

COVINGTON - Newton basketball standout Jamon Hawkins will follow in his parents footsteps by playing basketball at the college level.

Hawkins recently signed with Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, where his mother, Geri Hawkins, played and graduated.

His father, Antly Hawkins, played at neighboring Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

"I am very proud of Jamon and am excited for him to have this special opportunity to continue playing the game he loves while getting an excellent education at a reputable Georgia state school," Newton coach Rick Rasmussen said. "Coach (Mike) Leeder has a winning resume and in only his third year there, has really begun to turn the program around, since they've made the move up to the NCAA Division II level."

All GSW athletics programs are currently undergoing the transition of moving up from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and the highly competitive Peachbelt Conference.
