Police track suspects in car robbery

CONYERS - Police continue to question a man who said three men followed him, beat him and then stole his car.

Conyers Police Chief David Cathcart said the victim told officers that he was traveling along Ga. Highway 138 at about midnight Monday from Covington when he noticed a car following him as he turned onto Dogwood Drive. As he neared Outback Steakhouse, the suspect vehicle allegedly pulled up beside the victim as if to run him off the road. The victim then pulled into the parking lot at La Quinta Inn.

"Three black males jumped out of the car, which was described as a white Mitsubishi Eclipse with a tan convertible top," Cathcart said. "The males opened his door and dragged him out of his car and started to punch and kick him repeatedly."

The suspects reportedly wore oversized white T-shirts with bandannas over their faces. One of the men was also wearing a black do-rag, Cathcart said.

The victim told police he started to fight back harder when the suspects tried unsuccessfully to put him inside the Mitsubishi. The suspects opted instead to steal the victim's yellow 2001 Ford Mustang with chrome wheels.

Cathcart said the victim walked to his home on College Avenue before he called police.

"He had visible injuries to face and nose and his mouth was really swollen," the chief said.

The victim was transported to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Cathcart said officers located the Mustang early Tuesday afternoon in Covington and planned to question the victim further about the incident.

In other crime news, police continue to search for a man who robbed Long John Silver's at about 4 p.m. Monday. Witnesses told investigators that the slim black man first entered the restaurant on Ga. 138 at about 2:30 p.m. and went to the restroom. He then left and returned about 45 minutes later. The third time he came back, he pointed a gun at the employees and demanded that they give him the money from the register, Cathcart said.

He was last seen running in the wooded area behind the restaurant.

The man was described as being about 6 feet tall with a goatee. He was wearing a brown ball cap with the hood of a black sweatshirt pulled over the hat. He held the gun in his right hand wrapped with a blue bandanna.
