Simulcast to benefit new Miracle League field

COVINGTON - Anyone interested in honing his or her leadership skills is invited to attend an upcoming event that will serve the dual purpose of a training seminar and fundraiser for the proposed Miracle League Field.

The Maximum Impact Simulcast, a one-day leadership event featuring well-known national and world leaders as keynote speakers, will be broadcast live Friday from the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta for viewing at the Turner Lake Recreation Complex, located at 6185 Turner Lake Road. Covington is one of several outer metro Atlanta locations selected to host a simulcast of the event.

With the theme of "Leadership That Inspires," speakers will include Tony Blair, former prime minister of the United Kingdom; Jack Nicklaus, winner of a record 18 major golf championships and Sports Illustrated's Individual Male Athlete of the Century; Liz Murray, whose life story - once homeless, she went on to attend Harvard University - inspired a Lifetime Television movie; Al Weiss, president of worldwide operations for Walt Disney Parks and Resort; and others.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch and snacks provided by Covington Chick-fil-A, which is sponsoring the event in collaboration with the Newton County Recreation Commission.

Tickets are $75 per person. The cost of hosting the event is $4,000, and once that expense is met, the remaining proceeds will benefit the Miracle League Field for disabled children, planned for City Pond Park, Chick-fil-A Operator Chris Giella said.

"This is really for anyone. It's really for those who are interested in growing and developing themselves," including current community and business leaders, those who want to assume a more active leadership role, and high school and college students, Giella said.

It was Giella and his wife Amy, who have been managing the local Chick-fil-A since September, who approached Recreation Commission Director Tommy Hailey about hosting the simulcast.

"Through the simulcast, Chick-fil-A has afforded the opportunity for our citizens to come together to hear and learn from some of the world's most successful leaders, and in the same instance, contribute and give back to their community," Hailey said.

Speakers will share their wisdom and experience on leadership and how they've overcome challenges.
