CONYERS - Four separate high schools will join together next week for a special and unique event.
Advanced choirs from three Rockdale County high schools - Heritage, Rockdale County and Salem - as well as Eastside High School in Covington will perform a joint concert called Choral Masterworks.
"It's a good way to get everybody together," said Augustus Godbee, a choral director at RCHS. "Usually the schools are competing in sports, but this is one way to bring them together through the arts and see a bigger picture."
The students will perform a short piece, Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus," as well as a longer piece, Vivaldi's "Gloria."
Godbee said most of the audience should recognize Mozart's song and will enjoy the longer piece, which is about 30 to 40 minutes of solos and chorus performances.
"All of the choirs that are participating are the cream of the crop from every school," Godbee said. "It's something to see."
A chamber orchestra, featuring strings, trumpet sand other instruments, will accompany the group.
"A lot of people do (concerts) with a piano accompaniment," Godbee said. "We wanted to use a chamber orchestra so the kids will have the experience to sing with the orchestra. ... A lot of kids won't ever have an opportunity to sing in a big choir in college or professionally."
The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Conyers, which is located at 2100 Ga. Highway 138 N.E. in Conyers.
Tickets are $5 at the door. Proceeds benefit all of the schools' chorus departments.
Godbee said the programs receive little money from the state and county, so this will help pay for the orchestra and order musical score sheets for the students.
"It's a pretty good deal to see this piece for that price and support the program," Godbee said. "They will be singing something around 100 years old and will be performing it the way it's meant to be performed, as a large group and with an orchestra."
