Newton qualifies 4 for state

DECATUR - The Newton track teams collected a total of four state meet berths during the Region 2-AAAAA meet at Panthersville Stadium.

The Newton boys earned two trips to the state meet in Jefferson, which starts Thursday.

Brian Forde won the region championship in the discus with a throw of 141 feet, 11 inches.

Tyler Ransom wrapped up a trip to state with a second-place finish in the pole vault. He posted an effort of 11 feet, 6 inches.

For the Newton girls, Chaconna Marks took home the region title in the discus with a toss of 109 feet, 61/2 inches. She also placed third in the shot put with an effort of 35 feet, 2 inches.

Keycia Thompson earned the other state berth by finishing second in the pole vault at 8 feet.

The Newton boys finished sixth in the team standings with 48 points. Union Grove tallied 110 points to edge Redan and Douglass, who tied for second at 107. Stephenson was fourth at 106 followed by M.L. King at 57.

Bart Lindsey finished fourth for the Rams in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.89 seconds, while Yvens Joseph added a fourth in the 800-meter run at 2 minutes, 0.23 seconds.

Raymond Menefee collected fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 44.20 seconds. He also placed sixth in 1,600 at 4:53.95.

Newton's 4x100-meter relay team also chipped in a fourth-place finish (42.75 seconds).

Akeem Hunt placed fifth in the long jump at 21 feet, 71/2 inches.

The Newton girls finished seventh overall in their meet with 51 points. Redan won the region championship with 132 followed by Stephenson with 120.

Aliea Griffith had a near-miss for the Lady Rams in the triple, finishing third at 34 feet, 10 inches. She also placed sixth in the long jump (15 feet, 10 inches).

Ameryst Armstead took fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12 minutes, 38.19 seconds and seventh in the 1,600-meter run at 5 minutes, 50.85 seconds.

Danielle Manning added a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (12.82 seconds).
