COVINGTON - The Covington YMCA's Cheerios Challenge is just around the corner.
The event features a 10K/5K road race and a 1-mile fun run/walk and will take place Saturday, April 18, at the YMCA on Newton Drive.
The race is the local YMCA's way of celebrating Healthy Kids Day, an annual national event with the mission of promoting good health in communities.
The race has been growing in popularity since it started eight years ago, and this year as many as 1,000 participants are expected, said YMCA Membership Director Kacie Brown.
"Participation in this event has grown tremendously in such a short time," she said. "It is a great day for the YMCA and for our community. In 2008, 892 walkers and runners participated and we expect even more in 2009. We appreciate the hard work of our 74 volunteers who come out to make this event possible. The excitement and support around Cheerios Challenge is contagious."
The 10K race begins at 7:45 a.m. followed by the 1-mile fun run/walk at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.
Pre-registration runs through April 10.
The cost for those who pre-register is $15 for the 10K and 5K; $12 for the 1-mile fun run/walk; and $45 for a family of four.
Race day prices, which take effect April 11, are $20 for the 10K/5K; $15 for the 1-mile fun run/walk; and $60 for the family pack.
All proceeds will benefit the YMCA's Partner With Youth program, which grants scholarships to children and families who otherwise would not be able to afford the Y's services.
