COVINGTON - A man cutting down a tree at a residence on Macedonia Road was killed Wednesday morning when the tree fell on him, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office. The 63-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to NCSO spokesman Lt. Mark Mitchell, the tree service was a family-owned business out of Lithonia, but Mitchell said both the name of the business and the name of the victim are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. Mitchell said two men, believed to be a father and son, were doing tree service work at 563 Macedonia Road off Henderson Mill Road about 11 a.m. "During the course of cutting the trees down, one of the trees struck one of the workers, killing him," Mitchell said. The investigation into the incident, which Mitchell said is believed to have been an accident, will be conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division of the NCSO and the Newton County Coroner's Office.
