Polls open for today's local ballots
Elections up for grabs in Porterdale, Social Circle

COVINGTON - Voters will have the opportunity to cast ballots today in two local elections.

Two names are on the ballot in a special Porterdale City Council election. Lowell Chambers, 52, and Andy Grimes, 44, are seeking the Post 5 seat vacated by former Councilwoman Kay Piper, who resigned in October.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Porterdale Fire Station on Main Street.

Chambers, an engineer who serves as watershed director of the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management, has lived in Porterdale since 2000 and Newton County since 1994. Chambers, who is making his political debut, said in an earlier interview that he decided to run for Piper's unexpired term because he is concerned the town is in danger of losing ground it has gained over the past several years.

In his fourth attempt to win a seat on the Porterdale City Council, Grimes said his goal is to allow residents to have more input on how the city is run. Grimes has lived in Porterdale for 11 years. He is an Oxford native and has been employed by Beaver Manufacturing in Mansfield for 11 years.

Polls are also open in Social Circle from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., where voters will have the opportunity to vote on a liquor-by-the-drink referendum.

Social Circle restaurants can already serve beer and wine. The referendum requires restaurants to generate more than 50 percent of their revenue from food in order to serve liquor by the drink.

Polling in Social Circle will take place in the community room at City Hall.

According to City Clerk Susan Roper, one absentee ballot has been cast in the referendum and 19 voters cast advance ballots.
