CONYERS - This month's snow day may turn out to be a free day for some staff and students in Rockdale County Public Schools.
RCPS Superintendent Samuel King recommended during a work session Thursday night that the Rockdale County Board of Education approve a provision to the 2008-09 calendar that would not require students and classified staff to make up the March 2 school day that was canceled when a winter storm dropped several inches of snow. King recommended that certified staff document the eight hours they missed by June 3.
The last day of school is May 29. Graduation is scheduled for that weekend, which does not allow for a feasible makeup day, he said.
King said this is consistent with previous years when schools were closed due to weather.
King said the Official Code of Georgia Annotated allows for this change.
The code reads, "A local board may, without the necessity of authorization from the state board, elect not to continue school into the following week if the additional days otherwise needed are the result of days when school was closed due to emergency, disaster, act of God, civil disturbance and shortage of vital or critical material. In such case, the local board of education may terminate school at the end of the last school day of the last complete week of the school year."
But just because students and teachers are getting a break this year doesn't mean next year will be the same way if another winter storm comes this way.
King then recommended that the board approve a revision to the 2010-11 school year calendar.
"In order to provide for a provisional day in the event of snow or other inclement weather, a snow day has been designated for Friday, May 27, 2011," King said in his recommendation. "This day would follow the original last day of school and have no impact on the remainder of the 2010-11 school calendar."
The school board is expected to approve the recommendations on a consent agenda during its monthly board meeting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. The board meets in the board room at the administrative complex, which is located at 954 N. Main St. in Conyers.
