Boy Scouts gear up for Pinewood Derby, cook-off event

COVINGTON - It's a weekend for competition among the local scouts.

The Yellow River District Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops of Newton and Rockdale counties will hold their fourth annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday, along with a chili/Dutch oven cook-off.

Starting at 9 a.m., scouts and the general public are invited to Prospect United Methodist Church, which is located at 6752 Ga. Highway 212 in Covington.

"It's our biggest event of the year," said Jeff Greenich, derby racing official. "It's very loud and exciting for everybody."

From 9 a.m. through the afternoon, scouts and the general public will participate in the races.

For the first hour, anyone can participate in the open races with cars that meet the derby specifications. Greenich said normally other scouts and their families participate in these races. Anyone with questions should call him at 678-477-5044.

"Usually we have over 125 kids participating, plus their parents and siblings, so sometimes we have over 500 people there," Greenich said.

After the open races, the Cub Scout racers will compete.

At 10 a.m., the Tigers, or the first graders, will start their races. Following them will be the second-grade Wolves, the third-grade Bears, the fourth-grade Webelos 1 and the fifth-grade Webelos 2. The races are expected to last until mid-afternoon, Greenich said.

"We'll also have karaoke between the races," Greenich said.

In addition to the derby, Boy Scout Troop 748, based at Prospect UMC, will hold the first Chili/Dutch Oven Cook-Off, which is open to the public. "Celebrity" judges like state Sen. John Douglas and Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown will judge the event, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Lunch combos are available from the cook-off entries, and an award will be presented for the best chili or Dutch oven dish. Door prizes, such as a stereo system and gift cards to local restaurants, will be awarded from the tickets purchased with the meal. Proceeds from sales of the meals will support the Boy Scouts' summer camp.
