Heritage boys, girls sweep past Rockdale
Lady Patriots' Maloney scores perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory

CONYERS - Heritage set the tone in subregion play by sweeping Rockdale 5-0 in both the boys and girls tennis matches at Heritage on Thursday.

Not only did the Heritage girls win their match, they dominated, allowing Rockdale to win only five sets.

"This was a good start for us. We felt like all the girls came out and competed hard and obviously played real well," Heritage girls coach Brian Smith said. "We're happy to get that first win in the subregion. It's our first step to try to gain a subregion title."

Heritage's Alix Maloney, at No. 3 singles, had the only perfect match for the girls blanking Anna Grace Slifko 6-0, 6-0.

Winning one set for Rockdale, but losing the match 6-0, 6-1, were Mequilla Franklin and Rachael Ceciliani at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

Taking the victory for Heritage were Taylor Maloney at No. 1 singles and Stephanie Humphries at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Heritage's Callie Alford and Amanda Voyles defeated Rockdale's Mei Lin and Sammy Girardot 6-0, 6-1.

Rockdale had its best success at No. 2 doubles in their 6-2, 6-0 loss.

Taking the match for Heritage were Kelli Smith and Kaylee Humphries beating Zuri Eshun and Keeyah Byrd.

"We've worked hard in conditioning and we've put in a lot of time out on the court. Our hard work is starting to show up for us," Smith said.

The first set of No. 2 boys singles match was as close as possible. but Heritage's Zachary Landy put it away 7-6 over Rockdale freshman Shoman Kasbekar.

Landy went on to win the second set and the match 6-0.

"Shoman hung tough in there against a very good veteran player," Rockdale boys coach Stephen Sansing said. "Shoman, considering it's his second match of the season, it's the first time he's really been tested at all. It was good to see him compete like that."

The rest of the matches were not as close for Rockdale as Heritage's Jonathan Stone at No. 1 singles and Joey Roppo at No. 3 singles beat Anthony Adams and Kevin Lin 6-0, 6-0.

The No. 1 doubles team of Frankie Merkel and Trey Calcinore crushed Jasen Lauritsen and Pathya Kunthy 6-2, 6-1 while Cody Provence and Erik Lauritsen defeated Tommy Schimmel and Michael Taylor 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

"We've got to treat today as a learning experience and use it to get better for the rest of the (sub)region," Sansing said.

In Wednesday's Rockdale and Monroe Area match, it was Rockdale that was victorious winning 4-1 in the boys match and 3-2 in the girls.

Winning for the boys in singles were Kasbekar (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1 singles, Jasen Lauritsen (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2 singles and Kunthy (6-0, 6-2) at No. 3 singles. The team of Adams and Kevin Lin won their doubles match 8-3.

In the girls match, it was Slifko winning 8-3 at No. 3 singles with Rockdale taking both doubles matches.

Mei Lin and Girardot won their match 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles with Byrd and Eshun winning No. 2 doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 score.
