Man dead in shooting
2 others injured Monday in neighborhood south of Covington

COVINGTON - One man was killed and two other people injured in a triple shooting Monday morning in a small, quiet neighborhood just south of Covington.

According to Lt. Tyrone Oliver of the Newton County Sheriff's Office, Calvin Kentrell Banks, 34, of 45 Appia Way, died at Newton Medical Center shortly after the shootings, which were reported at about 9:45 a.m. The other two victims, one an adult male and the other a female teenager, were taken to area hospitals, he said. Their conditions were not immediately known and authorities have not released their names. It is still unclear, Oliver said, what the relationship is between the three victims.

All three of the victims were shot inside Banks' home in the Cedar Creek subdivision, about 1.5 miles south of Covington on Ga. Highway 36. The subdivision is made up mostly of small ranch and split-level homes.

Oliver said the Sheriff's Office was notified by a phone call that originated at the Appia Way residence, although it was unknown Friday afternoon who had made the call. "It was someone at the residence," Oliver said. "It was someone who had been shot."

One woman at the scene Monday afternoon, who identified herself as a friend of Banks, said he had just moved into the neighborhood on Friday. She said Banks was renting the house, but she did not know who owns it.

Oliver said the Sheriff's Office has a few names of people to question in connection with the shootings but cannot release them due to the ongoing investigation. He also said it has not been determined if more than one suspect was involved or if more than one weapon was used.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis said an autopsy would be conducted today by the state Medical Examiner's Office to determine the manner and cause of Banks' death.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said the GBI is assisting the Sheriff's Office in the investigation, providing crime scene assistance and an agent.
