"I am responding to two entries regarding restaurant ratings. First to the person that commented to the 'restaurants should suck it up and accept the new scores without a slap on the wrist' ... does this person know that this same department also issues builder and septic tank permits and with none of the building going on there is a financial burden on the department and the only way to make money is through reinspections at this time. We had a person from the Gwinnett County office admit that this department is struggling with finance problems. If you compare Newton County with all the other county inspections, you will see the difference. This is not a dictatorship where one person should have the say without any question. Also, the person that responded to 'local officials do not have a part in this ... it is state run,' there is a channel in which has to be gone through and having done that, we now have a meeting with our state representative. But thanks for the input."
"This 'thank you' goes out the city of Covington Police and Newton County Sheriff's Department for visiting that criminal rat hole of a house ... and arresting a few of the many that live there. I live in this neighborhood and I'm tired of all the people that hang around there. Now if code enforcement would do something about the dozen or so that live there, the street would be a lot safer."
I attended this past Friday night's concert on the Square. The crowd was good and the music was excellent. Unfortunately, we had a group of kids that were constantly running 'full speed' chasing each other up and down the sidewalks and in between groups of people who were seated under the trees trying to see the performers. I saw on several occasions where they ran into or almost knocked people down and also watched them as they 'leapt' over people's coolers trying to get through groups of seated adults. I don't blame the children, but I do blame the parents who have no respect for others by allowing this kind of behavior. Please parents, let us all enjoy our time at the concert by controlling your children."
"Drug testing is a great idea!"
"I surely wish our president understood the following statement. 'You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage-earner up by pulling the wage-payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.' Abraham Lincoln"
"Although I did not vote for Sheriff Brown, I must admit that he is doing a great job! I love the changes that he has made to the sheriff's department. In the past, it was rare to see a deputy patrolling the neighborhood. Lately, I take comfort in seeing them several times a day. Also, I seem to recall not too long ago, the sheriff's department couldn't and didn't solve the various homicides occurring in the county. I was impressed with the fact that under the leadership of Sheriff Brown, (arrests were made in) the most recent murder ... in a matter of days. To Sheriff Brown and the members of the Newton County Sheriff Department, keep up the great work!"
I understand the Newton County Industrial Authority with the mayor and commission chair met 6-16-09 to discuss the authority purchasing the railroad for trails after citizens of the county have made it known we want no part of this rails to trails project!
Editor's note: The Industrial Development Authority did not discuss the railroad purchase as part of the regular business of its most recent meeting, nor was the item on the agenda, according to Board of Commissioners Chairman Kathy Morgan. However, a group of citizens did attend the meeting to pose questions to the IDA regarding the issue. Morgan said there are not plans at this time for the IDA to purchase the rail line. The county is still gathering information so as to make an informed decision about the railroad, she said.
"Mayor and council get raises but the poor people who do all the work get their raises cut in half. Doesn't seem fair to me."
"I would like to know about the district that Liberty Middle school will have. I have a rising eighth-grader at VMMS and Liberty is much closer to our home. Also, a rising sixth-grader down the street has confirmation that he will go to Liberty this year. It would make no sense to run buses for both schools in the same neighborhood. I have called and e-mailed the NCSS with no response for three weeks now. Maybe the Citizen can get the scoop for me."
Editor's note: In April, the Newton County Board of Education announced that rising sixth-grade students from Livingston and South Salem elementary schools would be assigned to Liberty Middle School for the 2009-10 school year. Additionally, the Newton County School System reassigned students from Clements Middle to Liberty Middle School due to the opening of the parent-involvement theme school at the Clements site.
"Interesting. It would seem that President Obama's desire to negotiate with dictators and terrorist regimes rather than show force is working. According to today's news, North Korea is planning on participating in July 4th celebrations by launching a rocket toward Hawaii. Hopefully, the people of Hawaii do not have too close of a look at 'bombs bursting in air.' Come on, people! When will enough be enough? We need a leader with a spine, not someone who bends every time the political wind changes."
"There doesn't seem to be anything you can do about people that throw trash in front of your home or speed up in down your street, or talk and text on cell phones while driving or leave shopping carts out of their designated area so that they - meaning the shopping carts - can smash into your car to scratch or dent it. There doesn't seem to be anything about neighbors that let their dogs bark insensibly 24/7. Isn't it abuse when you neglect your animals?"
"I would like to say about all the competitions in the world where there is winners and there is losers and that ain't no big deal cause simple man stays simple to his life and to his simple woman. And also people been complaining about the rain. Stop it. Don't be complaining about the rain."
Has anyone thought that maybe the previous inspector wasn't doing their job and just letting the facilities do what they wanted to do. And they got by with it for so long until the new person started doing their job the right way. And yes they are all human and sometimes they may not see everything. The managers should ask questions if they see something that was or wasn't marked before and was this time. As far as I know, other facilities in other counties are not complaining as much as the ones in Newton. Just look at the scores in Gwinnett county, Cobb and Dekalb. The public should also be aware that a B score can be as good as an A score. Read!
As I read the police blotters every week, I see all of the men arrested for being behind on child support. I personally know men that get harassed about getting even a week behind in child support. However, my husband has been dealing with child support enforcement for a little over 15 years to get help from them. They won't take his calls, they don't keep him updated, they surely don't go out of the way to "ENFORCE" the laws if the Mom is behind. We know a few other men that are in the same position as well and have been going through the same exact thing. Why is it that child support enforcement comes down so hard on Dads, but if a Mom (who by the way isn't much of a Mom if she loses custody in the first place and still won't help support the child) If any Dad were to be so far behind, he'd still be sitting in jail 15-16 years later. Could someone explain? If you are a parent, regardless of gender, you are responsible to help support your child! If you aren't responsible enough to do so, then the laws should be enforced regardless of gender.
