Fishermen find body in creek

COVINGTON - The Newton County Sheriff's Office received a call about 4:30 p.m. from two fishermen who said they had found a body in Snapping Shoals Creek on Ga. Highway 212, according to spokesman Lt. Mark Mitchell.

Mitchell said late Friday that it had been confirmed that there was a body "wrapped in some sort of material" in the creek and it had been taken to the state crime lab for analysis. He said it was undetermined whether the body was male or female or how long it had been in the creek.

"We are currently trying to identify the body and are conducting a criminal investigation," he said, stopping short of saying this was the first homicide in Newton County for 2009. "We are checking with other counties and are looking at our own missing persons reports in an effort to make an identification. The GBI is assisting us in this investigation."

Mitchell said Snapping Shoals Creek is in the south portion of Newton County near the Henry County line. The portion of the creek where the body was found was between Lummus Road and Ga. Highway 81.

Mitchell said investigators are appealing to the public for any information that might be helpful in the investigation. Tips and information can be provided to the NCSO at 678-625-5007.
