Sheila Blackwell, who works for the Salvation Army store on Washington Street, restocks clothing racks with an assortment of "gently used" items. The Salvation Army of Newton County recently celebrated National Salvation Army Week with proclamations being signed by both Covington Mayor Kim Carter and Newton County Commission Chairman Kathy Morgan praising the organization for the assistance offered to the entire community and their contributions to the betterment of mankind. During the week, the store held Customer Appreciation Day and offered free food to customers and a $5 per bag sale, according to Service Center Director Jody Carver. Proceeds from the store, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, go to assist the needy.
