COVINGTON - The Covington YMCA Academy/Select Soccer Program, Covington Galaxy, will hold tryouts June 24 and 25 at the Covington YMCA Outdoor Center. Tryouts are for boys ages 8-14 and girls ages 8-15, and they are open to the public.
The Covington Galaxy Team of skilled soccer players has grown from 10 players in 2006 to more than 80 players in the 2008-09 season.
The program allows players to be exposed to more rigorous training than the YMCA Recreational Leagues and is targeted toward those hoping to improve their skill level to the point of playing high school or college soccer.
Academy/Select teams are coached entirely by state and/or nationally licensed coaches and see rapid improvement in skills and become overall better balanced soccer players, according to a press release from the YMCA.
"Since these teams travel, this program gives players the opportunity to see how their skills compare to other top players in surrounding communities," YMCA Select Volunteer Coach Philip Stephenson said. "It provides great exposure for players aspiring to continue play throughout their lives."
With its newly developed Covington YMCA Outdoor Center, the YMCA plans to grow this and many other sports programs to meet the needs of the community. The YMCA's recreational league for ages 3 to 14 will begin registration July 1.
