Bike Fest a resounding success

The gang was all there Saturday morning at the Washington Street Community Center when 50 youngsters showed up for the second annual Bike Fest. The event was open to children ages 3 to 13 and featured a bicycle safety check, a bike and helmet fit check, safety lessons and a skills course offered by the Covington Police Department. The day culminated with a parade of bike riders who pedaled to the Square and returned to the center. The event was co-sponsored by the CPD, the Covington-Conyers Cycle Club (C-4) and Conte's Bicycles and Fitness Equipment. C-4 President Maurice Carter said the volunteer effort for the event was outstanding with several officers from the CPD, 11 volunteers from C-4 and one volunteer from the Metropolitan Atlanta Cycling Club who drove out from College Park. "Mayor (Kim) Carter worked in the kitchen cooking pancakes for the WSCC Pancake Breakfast fundraiser," he said. "We gave away some 20 bikes and about 30 new helmets. It was a big success in every way."
