COVINGTON - Peter Yates will host an advanced wrestling camp June 29 and 30 at the Black Watch School of Wrestling in Covington.
Yates was a three-time state champion at Salem High School who just completed a successful freshman season at Virginia Tech wrestling at 149 pounds.
"It's an honor just to have somebody like that that is willing to come back," Black Watch owner Howard Walden said. "This is basically a home gym for Peter when he comes home."
The camp will not just be about getting on the mat.
Yates will talk about making the jump from high school to college wrestling, how not to peak too early and weight management. The camp is open to seventh- and eighth-graders, as well as high school-age kids and even college wrestlers. It includes four hours of coaching each day and the cost is $125.
Campers will receive a T-shirt and lunch, drinks and healthy snacks will be provided. A $75 deposit is required by June 15 to attend. If the June 29 camp fills up, Walden said Yates would be willing to have a second camp.
"He's humble, that's the cool thing about (Yates). He doesn't realize exactly who he is," Walden said. "Peter's a legend, a living legend in the state of Georgia. He's very remarkable once you start talking to him. He comes off a little shy, (but) once you get talking to him ... he really loosens."
