Drivers ed class expands
Conyers Honda donates car to open more spots

CONYERS - More East Metro teen drivers will have the opportunity to take a drivers education course thanks to support from local automobile dealerships.

When the Rockdale County drivers education program held its second registration last month, instructors thought it would be the last. But later, Conyers Honda donated a fourth car to the program, and it obtained a fourth instructor, so more spaces are now open.

"Conyers Honda and Courtesy Ford have been very kind to the drivers education program," said Charlie Bryant, drivers education instructor for Rockdale County Public Schools.

Since the program started, Ford has loaned the program vehicles for students to practice on in the class, and for the past three years, Honda has loaned the program a car.

This summer, Honda decided to loan the program two cars for students to use.

On Thursday, drivers ed staff picked up a 2007 Honda Accord and a 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid from Conyers Honda.

Bryant said his department was able to open up the program to more students with the additional donation. He said RCPS wouldn't be able to offer drivers education classes if it weren't for donations from these dealerships.

The program will hold the registration for the open spaces from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rockdale Career Academy, which is located at 1064 Culpepper Drive in Conyers, off Parker Road. Those registering should go to the CTAE office, which is located in the southwestern corner of the building.

Bryant said 13 spaces are open for the first session of summer drivers education.

Students who wish to register must be 15 years old or older and have a valid Georgia learners permit or license; both students in Rockdale County and outside of the county may register. They also must have between 10 and 15 hours worth of driving time before the class begins this summer.

Session one is scheduled to begin June 8 and run through June 23. Registered students will attend class from 8 to 11 a.m. each day and then attend a selected driving time later in the day, which they will determine at the time of registration. Driving times are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1 to 3 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.

Tuition is due at the time of Thursday's registration. The cost is $350 for in-county students and $400 for out-of-county students. The payment must be in the form of cash or money order, Bryant said.

During the morning class, students will receive general instruction time that includes lecture, videos and guest speakers. During their driving time later in the day, they will learn basic car control skills and driving in various conditions and areas.

After students successfully complete the class, they will earn a certificate that allows them to take their driver's test to obtain their license and also could save them money on car insurance with some companies.
