COVINGTON - The I-20 westbound ramp at exit 92, Alcovy Road will be closed for three weeks beginning Friday for ongoing construction, the Georgia Department of Transportation has announced.
The closing will run from 9 a.m. Friday through 5 p.m. June 26, while grade adjustments and ramp reconstruction are completed.
Motorists will be detoured to I-20 westbound exit 90 at U.S. Highway 278 and Turner Lake Road and will travel I-20 eastbound back to exit 92. Short delays can be expected.
Speed limits in the work zone have been reduced and will be strictly enforced. Message boards, signs, barricades, barrels and cones will be used to alert and channel motorists through the area. Drivers should be aware that personnel and equipment will be operating in close proximity to travel lanes.
Alcovy Road and the I-20 westbound off ramp are the focus of major work over the next 45 days, part of a larger construction project that involves the widening of Ga. Highway 142 from south of Lochridge Drive to the railroad bridge just north of Hazelbrand Road, and from I-20 west of exit 92 to exit 93 between the railroad crossing and Harland Drive.
The project completion date is scheduled for July 15, according to DOT Spokeswoman Cissy McNure.
In the near future on Alcovy Road, there will be a traffic split, signal activation and final paving, markings and signs installed, she said.
