Students can tour schools this Friday
NCSS to hold open houses

COVINGTON - Ready or not, the start of the new school year is less than a week away for Newton County students.

To become more acclimated with the school environment again, Newton County School System will hold an open house day on Friday for students and their parents.

Elementary schools and the new parent-involvement theme schools in the Fairview Elementary and Clements Middle school buildings will hold an open house from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, middle schools will open. And high schools will open to students and parents from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday.

"Attending open house is always a good idea, whether your child is new to the school or a returning student," said Sherri Viniard, director of public relations at NCSS. "It gives the student and parent an opportunity to meet the teachers and administrators and see the school."

She said it helps ease first-day jitters that many students seem to have every school year.

"Whether it's a kindergarten student just starting school or a sixth-grader or ninth-grader rising up to middle school or high school, there's going to be some stress for the child and the parent, and we know that," she said. "Visiting the school in advance and having the opportunity to meet the teachers really does help with that."

Each school handles open house differently, but while attending, parents may be able to find out information about bus routes, pick up and drop off information, school meal accounts and volunteer opportunities. Students and parents also will meet some teachers and administrators, tour the school and may get information about school supply lists, schedules and clubs.

More information about open houses is available by visiting the NCSS Web site, www.newtoncountyschools.org, or calling the individual schools.
