Man, 18, drowns Saturday

COVINGTON - An 18-year-old Covington man drowned at Factory Shoals Park on Saturday afternoon, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

DaKota Spruill of 60 Hallmark Lane died after jumping into the rushing waters at the park, said Cpl. Anthony Washington, acting NCSO public information officer.

"He went down to a spot called The Rock where they jump off the rock into the Alcovy River," Washington said. "The people there saw him jump in, but never saw him surface. Moments later they saw his cap floating in the water. They jumped in and attempted to locate him. They did locate him and removed him from the river and started CPR."

Washington declined to give the names of the "two to three people" who attempted the rescue.

"EMS arrived at the scene and continued CPR and he was transported to Newton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead," Washington said.

He said the witnesses said the young man arrived at the river about 2 p.m. alone and no one at the scene knew who he was.

He remained unidentified until about 2 a.m. Sunday.

"A family member called Factory Shoals Park and spoke with an employee there, who referred them to the Sheriff's Office," Washington said. "The Sheriff's Office spoke with the family members and obtained some information and confirmed that this was their family member who was missing."

Washington said it was unknown what caused the young man to drown.

"There's a lot of rocks there. It's unknown if he got tangled up or slipped and hit his head," he said.

An autopsy was expected to be performed Monday to determine the cause of death.

A 35-year-old Conyers woman also drowned at the park in mid-April.
