The pressures in today's world make some of us go slap crazy! We have a governor, supposed to be on a hike, but he is in South America cheating on his wife. So-called investors are stealing money from clients. People are robbing other people, and shootings are all too common. Greed is everywhere, even among our members of Congress.

It was discovered recently that $200,000 was missing from the New Orleans police evidence room. Wouldn't you think that might be a secure place?

Headlines in many of our nation's newspapers read the same. Woman shot in downtown motel. Bank robber gets out of jail and returns to his old profession. Robs another bank. State official goes to jail for taking bribes. Task force arrests drug dealers and child predators. Woman sentenced for embezzling, and a man-and-wife team fill up their car at a local service station driving off without paying. Someone throws a rock through a family car window at the mall parking lot and steals vehicle's contents.

A young man filled with patriotism joins the service and his unit is sent to Iraq. He puts his life on the line for his country. When he finally returns home, he finds some scum-bag burglar has broken into his home and has stolen its contents. Adding insult to injury, the thief has punched holes in the walls and spray painted the kitchen.

A woman leaves a small child in a hot automobile while she shops. A man leaves two dogs in a truck with the windows cracked while he runs errands in 90-degree heat. Florida woman has boyfriend move in with her. He brings a 12-foot pet python. Snake gets out of cage, bites and strangles 2-year-old female child!

What is happening to us, folks? Where are we headed and what have we done with our common sense and our compassion for our fellow citizens?

Maybe we'd better get serious and send a message that this kind of conduct is not approved and will be punished to the full extent of the law.

Each individual must speak out against ignorance, criminal behavior and corruption. We have to stand together and protect our community from those who insist upon living among us while failing to adhere to law and order.

James Harrington reminded us that without the hands and swords of man, the law is but words and paper. And, former President Hoover said if law is only upheld by government officials, then all law is at an end.
