COVINGTON - The Family Readiness Group supporting the Covington National Guard Armory is holding a school supplies drive to benefit the children of soldiers currently in Afghanistan.
Through Aug. 3, the community can donate supplies such as pens, paper, pencils, markers, folders, notebooks and new or gently used backpacks, which will be distributed to the soldiers' children at a back-to-school party planned for Aug. 8 at the Covington Armory.
Collection sites are at Dollar Tree stores in Covington, Conyers and Lithonia and Curves fitness centers at 55 Crowell Road in Covington and 1105 West Ave. in Conyers.
The Family Readiness Group will pick up any large donations made by businesses and churches or other organizations.
"We have a lot of young families in our company, and we just want to celebrate them," said Family Readiness Coordinator Kim Schroeder, adding that some families have as many as three to five school-age children.
Schroeder said the goal of the supply drive is to lift the kids' spirits and help parents with the cost of purchasing back to school essentials.
For more information or to arrange a pick up time for a large donation call Schroeder at 770-262-0265.
