OXFORD - The city of Oxford passed a rollback millage rate during its monthly meeting Monday night.
The rollback rate will be 5.508, which is an increase from the current rate of 5.330. The rate is called a rollback rate because entities still collect the same amount of taxes as they otherwise would have collected because property values have decreased. The council decided to pass the rollback rate to "keep taxes at the level that they've been at," said Mayor Jerry Roseberry on Tuesday. He said this rate will generate no change to the tax revenues received by the city and that customers won't notice much of a change to their tax bills. "It will be so small that nobody will notice it," he said. "It will be a very small change." In June, the Newton County Board of Commissioners passed a millage rate of 11.63, including the hospital indigent fund, emergency medical services and state of Georgia millage, plus an additional .792 mills for the fire district, paid by residents of unincorporated Newton County, Mansfield, Newborn and Porterdale. In other Oxford news, the City Council plans to meet at 6 p.m. July 20 for its monthly work session. Staff Reporter Crystal Tatum contributed to this article.
