Heritage squads win in region

CONYERS - The Heritage basketball teams opened their second swing through Region 8-AAAA South play by sweeping visiting Monroe Area on Friday night.

In the boys game, the Patriots (14-6 overall, 4-1 in 8-AAAA South) used a barrage of 3-pointers to subdue Monroe Area 73-41.

The Lady Patriots (11-8, 2-3) held on for a 48-44 decision in the girls game.

Monroe Area held a 6-5 lead in the first quarter until Heritage's Shakeem Mitchell nailed back-to-back 3-point bombs to put his team in front for good.

Leading 15-9 after the first frame, the Patriots drained four straight treys - one from Miles Harris, two from Twon Wade and the final one by Garry Peters - to start the second quarter, opening up a 27-11 advantage.

Heritage built a 34-17 halftime lead.

Early in the third quarter, Heritage erased any hopes of a Monroe Area comeback, racing out to a 49-19 lead after a 15-2 run. Harris, a sophomore, started the run with a 16-foot jumper and Peters finished it off with another trey.

In the fourth quarter, Heritage's Mitchell displayed his shooting touch, scoring 10 points off jumpers, including two from 3-point distance. He finished with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds.

"Right now, we're just playing terrific. We've won 10 out of our last 12 (games)," Heritage coach Ron Bradley said.

Peters chipped in 14 points and eight boards, while Harris added 12 points and three steals.

Center Justin Jones had a team-high 16 rebounds to go along with six points and three blocked shots.

Defensively, Heritage allowed Monroe Area to score double-digits in only one quarter, the fourth with 15.

The Patriots will now turn their focus to a pair of road games, starting at Winder-Barrow tonight and then at county rival Rockdale on Tuesday.

The Lady Patriots needed a fourth-quarter surge to sweep the season series with Monroe Area.

The Lady Purple Hurricanes took a 38-36 lead with 4:57 left in the contest, but Heritage answered with an 8-0 run to seize control.

Shaddai Wiggs started the run with a strong move in the low post and a layup off a steal. Jana Dixon followed with a layup in the paint and Giovanni Sims capped off the run with another layup, this one off a pretty up-and-under move in the post.

Monroe Area closed its deficit to 42-40 in the final minute, but Wiggs scored off a back door cut for Heritage and Jasmine Middlebrooks converted both ends of a one-and-one to seal the victory.

Dixon finished with a game-high 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Lady Patriots, while Wiggs added 10 points.
