COVINGTON - Along with 15 other schools, the Newton wrestling squad is just hours away from competing in the Class AAAAA team duals championship in Macon.
For the Rams, led by first-year coach Wes Cooper, it is the second straight year they have qualified for the tournament. Newton's first round opponent is Lovejoy today at the Macon Centreplex. The winner faces the victor between Collins Hill and Valdosta in the second round. Newton's berth to the state duals came after securing the No. 2 last seed Saturday during the Area 2-AAAAA duals at Redan High School. Ranked No. 3 in the Georgia Coaches Wrestling Poll, Union Grove claimed the top spot in 2-AAAAA. Even more recently, the Newton grapplers are coming off a split decision against Heritage (won 46-22) and Flowery Branch (lost 34-28) on Tuesday evening. Seniors Hosea Hines (189 pounds) and Corey Ware (125) have anchored the Rams on the mat all season long. Other top Newton wrestlers making an impact on the mat include Richard Jones (103), Ryan Mitchell (119), Alan Amentia (215), Aaron Reynolds (130), Brandon Lawson (171), Allen Ammancio (215), Michael Morgan (285), Joe Domizio (145), T.J. Jones (135), Andrew Terrell (152) and Carl Collins (130).More like this story
