On the road Saturday, the Heritage girls blasted Monticello to the tune of 53-23.
Meanwhile, Salem split a pair of close games at Jones County. GIRLS Heritage 53, Monticello 23 After coming off a disappointing loss to crosstown rival Rockdale the night before, Heritage (9-6 overall) responded with a decisive 30-point victory against Monticello. Salem 46, Jones County 44 The Lady Seminoles won their third straight game - in overtime, nevertheless - to improve to 14-2 overall on the season. "We had another hard fought battle with Jones County at their place," Salem coach Bill Roberts said. Precious Elkins led the Lady Seminoles with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Trailing by 10 points entering the fourth quarter, Salem's pressure eventually wore its opponent down, allowing it to find its transition rhythm. A layup by Shardai Harrison tied the game at 40 to end regulation, sending it to overtime. Harrison ended with seven points. Salem's Amber Johnson (six points) scored the game-winning basket on a layup. A 3-pointer at the final second was attempted; however, Ariel Wynter blocked the shot to secure the win. Wynter finished with six points and eight rebounds. Jaleen Thomas had five points and six boards. BOYS Jones County 54, Salem 50 The Seminoles lost their 12th game of the season in yet another heartbreaker, this time by just four points. "It was another real close game for us," Salem coach Darren Wilkins said. "We played hard and I thought we played well." Salem's Shaquille Johnson finished with a team-high 19 points.
